WHAT IS A MATTRESS | In the United States it is typically constructed of multiple layers of foams, natural and/or synthetic fibers, and springs.
A mattress can be used alone, on the floor, but is usually placed atop some platform so as to be higher off the ground. Such a platform might be a foundation made with metal springs in a wooden frame.
Mattresses made mainly of foam materials such as latex foam, viscoelastic foam and other polyurethane-type foam, are becoming more common.
Mattresses can be constructed to use almost any support system such as air, water, foam, or springs. |
